New Haven in 1776 — Patriots, Loyalists, and the people caught between them.
A Broken Umbrella Theatre stages the Revolution as the town actually met it: not as settled history, but as an argument the city was still having with itself. Audiences move room to room through the Blake Street Center in Westville, entering in small groups over roughly 30 minutes.
This October is a work-in-progress showing — a first draft put in front of an audience on purpose, ahead of a full production in 2027. A Broken Umbrella has spent seventeen years making original theatre out of New Haven’s history, and for the 250th the company went at the myths themselves: who gets remembered as a patriot, who gets written out, and what a town does while it decides.
