Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center will hire a consultant to support our board of directors’ transition from a working board to an advisory board, providing training and guidance for best practices about board engagement and support of KTM&HC’s strategic goals. Board development will proceed alongside and inform our ongoing reinterpretation project. The goal of this initiative is to train and empower our board members and provide a strong foundation for subsequent strategic planning.

The goal of the Ridgefield Historical Society’s project is to improve the accessibility of its current historical documents and artifacts to our growing constituency, both online and in-person. This includes cataloging, digitizing, and organizing existing collections and creating policies for new acquisitions to advance our mission. To accomplish this objective, we will purchase a designated archival laptop, upgrade PastPerfect, and increase the hours of our newly appointed Collections Manager.

“What Does the First Amendment Mean Today?” is a program series examining the text, history, and current state of the First Amendment, created by Ridgefield Library, Ridgefield Historical Society, League of Women Voters, DAR and Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center. The partners have developed four free educational programs exploring concepts embodied in the First Amendment from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Programs will be held at the Ridgefield Library in Sept & Oct 2021.

COVID Relief Fund for Museums grants are OPERATING SUPPORT grants for larger museums and other 501c3 nonprofit organizations that provide humanities-based projects and activities for the general public (i.e., museums, historic houses, historical societies, cultural centers, and other types of non-profit organizations that offer activities like interpretive exhibitions, discussion-based public programs, or walking tours to the general public). This funding was made available to larger organizations with full-time staff and annual operating budgets of at least $450,000, with priority given to those with annual operating budgets of $500,000 or more. *These grants are administered by CT Humanities, with funding provided by the Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD)/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) with funding allocated to the State of Connecticut through the CARES Act.

Funding supports Hindsight is, a digital project to enhance distance learning for families and schools including research materials, a series of podcast episodes dramatizing historical figures, and online public conversations with collaborators including historians. The program will deepen the audience’s understanding of the ways local history can inform contemporary debates including systemic racism, voting rights, erasure of First Peoples, and fascism. The exhibition runs October to March and programming from September through November.

Votes for Women is a multi-faceted project celebrating the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment, created with the Ridgefield Library, the League of Women Voters, and the Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center. Funding enables the collaborators to develop and present a comprehensive series of free education programs (exhibits, lectures, performances, book discussions) exploring the Suffragist movement from a local, state, and national perspective. Programs will be held at partner venues from January through August 2020.

Keeler Tavern receives funding for a consultant-led initiative to conduct audience research (to gain a snapshot in time) and obtain the internal capacity to conduct audience research going forward (to evaluate results of changes and to track trends over time).
