Constance Baker Motley New Forever Postage Stamp Sparks Chester Celebration

A celebration of the new USPS first-class “Forever” stamp honoring Constance Baker Motley will be held at the Chester Meeting House (4 Liberty St) on Saturday, Feb. 17, 3-5 pm. Issued in the Black Heritage series, Motley’s stamp joins those of Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and John Lewis.

A native of New Haven, Motley had a home in Chester for 40 years. She is honored as the first Black woman federal judge, a ground-breaking Civil Rights attorney, and the first Black woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Co-sponsored by the Chester Historical Society, the Chester Land Trust and the Sari A. Rosenbaum Fund for Women and Girls at the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, the free event includes speakers, film clips from her life, and audience discussion. Refreshments served. All welcome. Snow date: Feb. 24.
