SUMMARY:The Girls Who Beat the Odds Stories of Women Who Changed the Course of Sports History (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual event with Mari K. Eder\, to celebrate the release of her new book\, The Girls Who Beat the Odds Stories of Women Who Changed the Course of Sports History.  \nThe untold and unheralded stories of women in sports history\, forgotten no longer… \nSo many women in sports history have been overlooked. Their strength and perseverance dismissed or forgotten. Even the most well-known women athletes don’t garner the same attention as their men counterparts. \nDespite this\, new generations are engaging with and supporting women athletes\, both as individual stars and on teams. Men’s sports continues to dominate in terms of media coverage and airtime\, but the momentum for women’s sports is here\, and it’s growing. Women today\, as skilled as they are in their own right\, stand on the shoulders of the giants who built the game\, brought the pain\, stayed the course\, and gave it their all. \nThis collection\, from renowned speaker\, author\, and retired U.S. Army Major General Mari K. Eder highlights all of these women\, covering incredible American athletes from the 1900s to the modern era. \nThe Girls Who Beat the Odds is a showcase of just how far women’s sports has come in the past hundred years—while honoring those who had the courage and fortitude to come first. \nMari K. Eder is a retired U.S. Army Major General\, a renowned speaker and author\, and a thought leader on strategic communication and leadership. General Eder is the former Commanding General of the U.S. Army Reserve Joint and Special Troops Support Command\, former Deputy Chief of the Army Reserve and former Deputy Chief of Public Affairs for the U.S. Army. General Eder is the author of “Leading the Narrative: The Case for Strategic Communication\,” published by the Naval Institute Press. \nPlease regsiter; Zoom links go out the day before the event

SUMMARY:The Me I Used to Be/Author Event with Kristan Higgins (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:One of our favorite authors returns! Join us for a moderated conversation with Kristan Higgins\, to celebrate the release of The Me I Used To Be.  \nAt their twenty-fifth high school reunion\, four former best friends discover that growing up is way messier than anticipated—and the past isn’t nearly as finished as they thought. \nBack in senior year\, Audrey\, Micah\, Jasmine\, and Beck were the Core Four: the lucky one\, the beautiful one\, the smart one\, the sporty one. They had color-coded dreams\, inside jokes\, and a lifelong friendship they thought would last forever. But graduation night ended in a tragic accident\, followed by the kind of silence that stretches for decades. \nNow\, they’ve returned for their reunion\, each carrying a life that looks nothing like the glossy future they imagined. There are stalled careers\, complicated marriages\, outspoken adult children\, and secrets that never fit into holiday cards. For one of them\, a diagnosis of early-onset dementia turns the weekend into a ticking clock. \nAcross one unforgettable weekend\, the Core Four must decide if their past can still change their future together. \nKristan Higgins is the author of more than two dozen bestselling novels\, which have been translated into 27 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. Her books have received dozens of awards and accolades\, including starred reviews from Entertainment Weekly\, People\, Publishers Weekly\, Library Journal and Booklist. \nKristan is the mother of two exceedingly charming adult children and the smitten grandmother of two little ones. She enjoys mixology\, the National Parks and being overly helpful to strangers. Kristan lives in Connecticut and is often at the family home on Cape Cod with her heroic firefighter husband\, a rambunctious dog and their indifferent cat. Learn more here.  \nBooks will be for sale at this event. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.

SUMMARY:Things We Found in the Ground: Virtual Author Event with Eleanor Bruce and Lucilla Gray
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual conversation with Eleanor and Lucilla\, to celebrate the U.S. release of Things We Found in the Ground. October is Archaeology Month in Connecticut! \nIn this guide-that’s-not-a-guide\, metal detectorist cousins Ellie and Lucie explore their local landscape\, getting to grips with the hobby\, history and themselves along the way. \nBeginning with their first meeting in over 20 years at their grandfather’s home in Lincolnshire\, the two cousins – Eleanor and Lucilla – quickly learn that each has a fascination with unearthing historic artefacts\, which will set them off on their metal detecting journey … \nOver many weeks and months spent digging countless holes\, the pair make startling discoveries: about the objects they find and what they tell us about our ancestors\, about themselves and who they are as people\, and about the power of community\, as they forge connections with local villagers\, detectorists and history lovers along the way. \nThis charming tale of (self-)discovery will capture the hearts and minds of those seeking escapism through the buried history that we walk over every day. \nAbout the authors: We are Ellie and Lucie\, cousins\, detectorists and authors. With over 5 years of experience out in the field (literally)\, we like to think we know a thing or two about the art of digging holes. Metal detecting for us was once a lockdown hobby… now it’s taken over both of our lives. Roman Found began as a creative outlet\, a way to share our adventures with fellow diggers\, hobbyists\, collectors and enthusiasts through the power of the internet—we never could’ve dreamed that we would connect with so many people. \nOur biggest inspiration will always be our finds and the stories they hold. Half of what we do is in the research\, searching beyond the dirt\, between the pages of a reference book for that tangible link back through decades\, centuries or even a millennia; a picture slowly building around that object we’ve pulled from the earth\, be it a button\, buckle or Roman coin.  Recently\, there has been a massive resurgence of public interest in history and in the stories still lost within our landscape. Metal detecting\, as a result\, has become\, dare we say it\, trendy… As active self recorders with the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme and PLA Permit Holders\, we aim to highlight the responsible side of metal detecting through our adventures\, adding to the public record responsibly and increasing the archaeological understanding of our region. Learn more here \nPlease register; Zoom links will go out the day before the event. \nSponsored by the Avon Library\, Avon Historical Society\, and Avon Senior Center.
