SUMMARY:Exploring the Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive: Preserving Folklife Through Sound
DESCRIPTION:Join Fairfield Public Library for a fascinating lecture with folklorist and researcher Derek Piotr\, founder of The Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive. \nThe Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive was established by Derek Piotr in August 2022. The Archive contains over 1\,500 audio recordings made from March 2020 onward\, and preserves diverse representations of folklife; ballads\, hymns\, tales\, poems\, children’s songs\, and interviews among them. The focus of this collection is on the “non-singer”: someone with no background in musical performance who can nevertheless relate a song or folkloric memory. In this lecture\, Derek will walk you through the process of journeying everywhere from Iceland to Appalachia to record these songs from non-musicians\, as well as the organization and development of the Archive as a web-based repository. \nPlease register.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Windsor Human Relations Commission and Windsor Historical Society for an afternoon of joy\, culture\, and community on the historic Palisado Green. Starting at 4 p.m.\, enjoy family-friendly crafts\, engaging story readings\, a bounce house\, lively performances by Magic Soul Academy drumline\, and delicious food from fantastic local food trucks. Come celebrate freedom\, history\, and togetherness with your friends and neighbors! \nAt 7 p.m.\, gather around a fire on grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor\, and take part in our annual audience-led firelight reading. This year’s reading is Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 essay\, “Liberty Further Extended.” Born in West Hartford in 1753\, Haynes was America’s first Black ordained minister. In this contemporary response to the Declaration of Independence\, Haynes argues against slavery\, calls out the hypocrisy of American’s war for “independence\,” and advocates for a better\, freer future. Participants are welcome to either take part and read the words or listen and reflect on this important piece of abolitionist history. \nBoth programs are outside. SUMMARY:The Roots of Democracy in Hartford: Annual Meeting & Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Ancient Burying Ground Association presents a lecture on democracy’s roots in Hartford. Erin Monroe\, the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture\, will speak about The Wadsworth’s latest exhibition\, Framing American Democracy: Radical Roots. She will discuss the connections between the Ancient Burying Ground and the exhibit. The museum’s founder\, Daniel Wadsworth\, was the heir of Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth\, a statesman\, business leader\, and veteran of the American Revolution. Daniel placed a monument to his father and family in the Ancient Burying Ground. The burial ground also hosts tablestones in honor of Hartford’s colonial founders\, including Rev. Thomas Hooker. Discover how Hooker and others laid the foundation for democracy in America. The lecture will be preceded by the Annual Meeting. \nErin Monroe is the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Wadsworth. She has been in the American art department in various capacities since 2007. Monroe is responsible for an extensive collection that encompasses colonial portraiture\, Hudson River School landscapes\, neoclassical sculpture\, American modernism\, and works on paper. SUMMARY:250th Parade Celebration and Ice Cream Social
DESCRIPTION:The East Windsor Historical Society is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a parade and ice cream social! The community is gathering together to acknowledge East Windsor’s contribution to the revolution. A parade will start at 11 AM and make its way into the museum grounds located at 113-115 Scantic Road. Then we’ll have our annual ice cream social with FREE ice cream! Other vendors will be on site and all of the museums will be open. Music\, activities\, and more!

Children can card wool\, weave on a loom\, use a rope and pulley to raise a hay bale and more! \nIn the Historic Coley House: \nGuided Tour – Life in the 1940s:Take a guided tour of the award-winning Coley House\, the only historic house in CT brought back to reflect life during the 1940s. Explore how the Coley family lived\, worked and played while on the home front during World War II. \nStroll through the Daniel E. Offutt\, III Sculpture Garden on our glorious 3.7 acre property.

Students will learn how to work the canals\, build a boat that floats\, and a rail that won’t fail. \nThursday\, August 6\, Impressions and Imagination. Connecticut has an important place in art history. Circa 1900\, American Impressionism found its heart in our tiny state. It was also the home of the creator of the Crayola crayon. Students will honor this history by creating their own Impressionist masterpiece and crafting with crayons. \nFriday\, August 7\, Modernizing Moments. Radio\, television\, and movies all found their form in the early 1900s. Students will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Historical Society’s collection\, explore the science behind these technologies\, and refresh themselves with a signature soda. \nRegistration required by July 24th. $45 for one day or $175 for the week.

DESCRIPTION:Children ages 8-11 (or entering 3rd-6th grade) will explore Windsor history while having fun in a historical setting! Learn about Windsor’s people and their stories while “doing” history! Daily program themes build an understanding of Windsor’s diverse history from earliest times to the present day. \nMonday\, August 3\, Colonial Connections. Students will learn about 1600s Connecticut through crafts and play. They will learn to weave\, make a sparkling shad\, and compete in colonial-era games. \nTuesday\, August 4\, 1776 Sensations. 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  In honor of the American Revolution\, students will set up a soldier’s tent\, discover the music of the fife and drum\, and learn the beautiful science of cartography. \nWednesday\, August 5\, Boats and Bridges. The early 1800s were defined by a transportation revolution. Trains\, bridges\, and the Windsor Locks Canal system forever changed how people and products came to Windsor. Students will learn how to work the canals\, build a boat that floats\, and a rail that won’t fail. \nThursday\, August 6\, Impressions and Imagination. Connecticut has an important place in art history. Circa 1900\, American Impressionism found its heart in our tiny state. It was also the home of the creator of the Crayola crayon. Students will honor this history by creating their own Impressionist masterpiece and crafting with crayons. \nFriday\, August 7\, Modernizing Moments. Radio\, television\, and movies all found their form in the early 1900s. Students will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Historical Society’s collection\, explore the science behind these technologies\, and refresh themselves with a signature soda. \nRegistration required by July 24th. $45 for one day or $175 for the week.

Children can card wool\, weave on a loom\, use a rope and pulley to raise a hay bale and more! \nIn the Historic Coley House: \nGuided Tour – Life in the 1940s:Take a guided tour of the award-winning Coley House\, the only historic house in CT brought back to reflect life during the 1940s.
