DESCRIPTION:Join the Windsor Human Relations Commission and Windsor Historical Society for an afternoon of joy\, culture\, and community on the historic Palisado Green. Starting at 4 p.m.\, enjoy family-friendly crafts\, engaging story readings\, a bounce house\, lively performances by Magic Soul Academy drumline\, and delicious food from fantastic local food trucks. Come celebrate freedom\, history\, and togetherness with your friends and neighbors! \nAt 7 p.m.\, gather around a fire on grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor\, and take part in our annual audience-led firelight reading. This year’s reading is Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 essay\, “Liberty Further Extended.” Born in West Hartford in 1753\, Haynes was America’s first Black ordained minister. In this contemporary response to the Declaration of Independence\, Haynes argues against slavery\, calls out the hypocrisy of American’s war for “independence\,” and advocates for a better\, freer future. Participants are welcome to either take part and read the words or listen and reflect on this important piece of abolitionist history. \nBoth programs are outside. In the case of heavy rain\, both programs will be moved indoors to Windsor Historical Society facilities. \nThis program is part of Windsor Historical Society’s WindsorCT250 commemoration activities. SUMMARY:Three Lighthouses Off New London at the Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:Lighthouses have safeguarded mariners for centuries. Many are cherished historic landmarks—beacons that symbolize hope\, safety\, guidance\, and enduring strength—including three majestic examples on the Connecticut coast owned by the New London Maritime Society (NLMS). Susan Tamulevich\, executive director of NLMS\, will share the colorful histories of the treasured lighthouses during a free NH250 event\, “Three Lighthouses Off New London\,” at the Pardee-Morris House on Sunday\, June 21\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. Register here. For weather updates check our Facebook/Instagram pages or visit newhavenmuseum.org. \nBeginning in 2009\, the NLMS assumed ownership of three historic beacons that guided vessels from the Atlantic into the port of New London in southeastern Long Island Sound: New London Harbor Light—established in 1761 and the oldest and tallest lighthouse on the Sound; Race Rock Light Station—constructed in the 1870s off Fishers Island\, a remarkable engineering achievement in the turbulent waters known as “the Race”; and New London Ledge Lighthouse—the 1909 brick ‘house’ affectionately called “Point Alpha” by Groton-based submariners. NLMS restores and maintains the three lighthouses and keeps them accessible to the public. \nTamulevich notes that as GPS technology supplanted the role of lighthouses as navigational aids\, a significant number of the structures have deteriorated due to neglect and the effects of climate change\, while others are being sold off to private owners. Thankfully\, the 2000 National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act recognizes the cultural\, recreational\, and educational value of historic light stations. DESCRIPTION:Windsor Historical Society invites the public to the opening reception of its new exhibition\, “These Hands\, This Leaf: Leonard Hellerman’s Photographs of Windsor’s Tobacco Workers\,” Wednesday\, June 24\, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the community\, and registration is encouraged. \nTobacco has long defined Windsor\, which is recognized as the heart of the Connecticut Tobacco Valley. This exhibit presents an intimate portrait of the skilled workers who built that legacy\, captured by Windsor photographer Dr. Leonard Hellerman. \nOne of Hellerman’s favorite subjects is Connecticut River Valley shade-grown tobacco (used mainly for premium cigars) cultivated under white cloth. “I have likely taken more photographs in shade tobacco fields than anyone\,” Hellerman said. Growing tobacco from seed to harvest requires months of skilled labor and care\, and he’s been there photographing every step. \n“Years ago\, I was given permission by [the Thrall family] to photograph their workers\, fields\, and sheds\,” Hellerman said. DESCRIPTION:The Ancient Burying Ground Association presents a lecture on democracy’s roots in Hartford. Erin Monroe\, the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture\, will speak about The Wadsworth’s latest exhibition\, Framing American Democracy: Radical Roots. She will discuss the connections between the Ancient Burying Ground and the exhibit. The museum’s founder\, Daniel Wadsworth\, was the heir of Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth\, a statesman\, business leader\, and veteran of the American Revolution. Daniel placed a monument to his father and family in the Ancient Burying Ground. The burial ground also hosts tablestones in honor of Hartford’s colonial founders\, including Rev. Thomas Hooker. Discover how Hooker and others laid the foundation for democracy in America. The lecture will be preceded by the Annual Meeting. \nErin Monroe is the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Wadsworth. She has been in the American art department in various capacities since 2007. Monroe is responsible for an extensive collection that encompasses colonial portraiture\, Hudson River School landscapes\, neoclassical sculpture\, American modernism\, and works on paper. DESCRIPTION:From the time of the Stamp Act in 1765 through the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781\, Connecticut’s seditious colonists used songs and hymns to foment rebellion\, commemorate victory\, and give thanks for preservation. Historical musician Richard Franklin Donohue will bring his spinet harpsichord to the Pardee-Morris House for a positively revolutionary performance\, “What A Glorious Crash They Made\,” on Sunday\, June 28\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. Register for the special NH250 event here. For weather updates check our Facebook/Instagram pages or visit newhavenmuseum.org. \n“What A Glorious Crash They Made” features a collection of songs and hymns published in Connecticut during the American Revolution. Donohue will sing\, sharing his original research and exploring the fiery repertoire that in the words of John Adams\, “cultivated the sensations of freedom.” \nDonohue searched historical newspaper databases to find original publications of songs that existed in Connecticut between 1768 and 1783. With newly composed lyrics for popular tunes\, the songs demonstrate the anger\, determination\, and gratitude of Connecticut’s patriot population. The program will span the Revolutionary War years with selections like John Dickinson’s “Liberty Song\,” William Billings’ “Chester\,” Andrew Law’s “Middletown\,” and popular British tunes with newer texts reflecting the cause of freedom. \nDonohue develops programs that explore the space around what he calls “the swinging door that exists between history and music.” He believes that music from any period needs to be presented with careful consideration of historical context\, instrumentation\, performance practice\, and linguistic detail. With pronunciation based on evidence left by Benjamin Franklin and Noah Webster\, and accompaniment on a spinet harpsichord\, Richard strives to create as authentic a sound as possible. \nNew Haven Museum thanks community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the 2026 summer season.

SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at Stamford History Center
DESCRIPTION:4th of July is back on the Steps of Hoyt-Barnum\, Stamford’s oldest dwelling\, celebrating 250 years of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\,  and Rick Petersen returns as your guide as General Putnam at 10 am sharp! He will be traveling through time to invite some notable figures throughout history including Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady-Stanton\, who will be delivering their famous speeches.  We will also be offering tours of the Hoyt-Barnum House. \nOur cast is outfitted by Sophia’s Costumes and Gifts in Cos Cob. Cabaret performer Mel McGuire returns to sing the National Anthem with Cabaret flair. Please bring chairs\, and additional parking is available in the Northeast Middle School parking lot.

Trains\, bridges\, and the Windsor Locks Canal system forever changed how people and products came to Windsor. Students will learn how to work the canals\, build a boat that floats\, and a rail that won’t fail. \nThursday\, August 6\, Impressions and Imagination. Connecticut has an important place in art history. Circa 1900\, American Impressionism found its heart in our tiny state. It was also the home of the creator of the Crayola crayon. Students will honor this history by creating their own Impressionist masterpiece and crafting with crayons. \nFriday\, August 7\, Modernizing Moments. Radio\, television\, and movies all found their form in the early 1900s. Students will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Historical Society’s collection\, explore the science behind these technologies\, and refresh themselves with a signature soda. \nRegistration required by July 24th. $45 for one day or $175 for the week.
