SUMMARY:The Science of Apizza: A Talk with Scott Wiener
DESCRIPTION:What is the magic that transforms a few simple ingredients into the miracle known as pizza? Scott Wiener\, renowned pizza authority and founder of Scott’s Pizza Tours in New York City\, will unravel the mouth-watering mystery during\, “The Science of Apizza: A Talk with Scott Wiener\,” on Thursday\, May 14\, 2026\, at 6 pm\, at the New Haven Museum (NHM). The program is the latest in the “Monthly Slice” series at NHM\, presented in conjunction with the exhibition\, “Pronounced Ah-Beetz.” Free with regular museum admission. Register here. \nIs it the water? The 100-year-old oven? The ingredients? Perhaps it’s the talent of the person creating the pie\, or all the above. Gorman Bechard\, director of “Pizza A Love Story\,” will explore the food-science phenomenon with Weiner in a conversation sure to be enlightening\, funny\, and perhaps a tad obsessive. United in their passion for pizza\, the two will look for answers to the question of what makes New Haven pizza so good. Visitors should don their Bill Nye hats and bring their questions to the Q&A which follows. \nThe “Pronounced Ah-Beetz” exhibition at NHM includes first-hand oral histories and pizza-related artifacts from personal collections\, video footage adapted from the documentary and photographs. The exhibition’s title comes from the way many people mispronounce the word apizza\, which originally grew out of the Italian la pizza. The exhibition will remain on view through October 2027.

SUMMARY:2026 Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival\, titled “Voices of Freedom: Resistance\, Justice\, and Revolution\,” will be held April 9-12 at locations both on and off Trinity College’s campus at 300 Summit Street\, Hartford. Highlights will include a lecture\, a student producer showcase\, dance battles\, and much more. A new permanent mural by international graffiti artists at Hartford’s Parkville Market aims to leave a lasting mark on the city. \nThe 2026 festival will present two internationally acclaimed co-headliners: Da Odd Couple\, the DJ duo of Rob Swift and Mista Sinista\, and B-Boy Tim Andria\, a breaking champion from France. All events are free and open to the public. \nThe milestone anniversary is being marked by Living Declarations: Photo Exhibit of Global Hip Hop in the City of Hartford 2006-2025\, which invites viewers to reflect on the festival’s past while imagining its future. It will be displayed April 5-19\, both on campus in The Cave (Mather Hall\, lower level) and at Parkville Market (1400 Park Street\, second floor)\, and also during the festival on Saturday\, April 11\, at 1390@Parkville (1390 Park Street).

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of Leadbelly (1976)\, photographer and director Gordon Parks’ powerful semi-biographical film about the life and music of Huddie Ledbetter\, better known as Lead Belly\, the legendary blues musician\, songwriter\, and cultural icon. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion with Prof. Sheila Curran Bernard\, author of Bring Judgment Day: Reclaiming Lead Belly’s Truths from Jim Crow’s Lies (2024). An Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker with credits on nearly 50 hours of programming\, mostly in prime time on PBS (including Slavery by Another Name and Eyes on the Prize)\, she is the Glen Trotiner Professor of Visual Storytelling in the Department of History at the University at Albany\, SUNY\, and director of its Graduate Program in Public History. \nShe will share her thoughts on the film and her book’s insights into Lead Belly’s complex story\, while highlighting the local connections of this giant of American music whose songs and spirit continue to shape our music today. \nThis screening is in conjunction with Westport Public Art Collections—Art\, Jazz + the Blues on view through April 26.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an important and illuminating afternoon featuring two powerful speakers whose work brings hidden histories into the light—both nationally and right here in Stamford. \n🎬 Award-Winning Film Screening & Q&A \nLarry Epstein\, two-time Emmy Award–winning journalist and documentary producer\, will present his filmThe Hidden History of Slavery in New York\, winner of an award at the 67th Annual New York Emmy Awards. \nWritten\, produced\, and researched by Epstein\, this 30-minute documentary confronts a largely untold chapter of American history: New York City’s central role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Through the lens of high school student Richard French IV\, the film explores how slavery was deeply rooted in the North—revealing New Amsterdam as a major epicenter and Wall Street as the country’s largest slave market in the 17th and 18th centuries.The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative\, offering critical historical context that challenges what many of us were taught in school. \nA Q&A with Larry Epstein will follow the screening. \n🗣 Local History\, Personal Legacy \nOur second speaker\, Bria Scott\, brings history home through her ongoing family research. DESCRIPTION:The Yale-China Association is proud to present the 15th annual Lunarfest in New Haven\, Connecticut\, on Saturday\, February 21\, 2026. As the largest celebration of Lunar New Year in Connecticut\, Lunarfest serves as a premiere cultural event\, promoting cross-cultural understanding through vibrant community collaborations. Lunarfest 2026 celebrates the Year of the Horse. The day’s festivities will begin at 10 am with a parade down Whitney Avenue between Grove and Trumbull Streets featuring a lion dance\, a traditional Chinese dance performance\, martial arts demonstrations\, and speeches from local community leaders. SUMMARY:9 to 5: The Story of a Movement
DESCRIPTION:50 years ago Ellen Cassedy was a founder and longtime leader of the 9 to 5 movement of working women that began in Boston. On Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, at 2 p.m.\, Cassedy will be at the New Haven Museum for a special screening of the documentary film\, “9 to 5: The Story of a Movement” by the Academy-Award-winning team Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar\, in which she appears. Admission is free. Register here. \nCassedy is the author of “Working 9 to 5: A Women’s Movement\, A Labor Union\, and the Iconic Movie\,” (foreword by Jane Fonda) and several other books. The film tells the story of how women workers began in a circle talking about their jobs and went on to build a nationwide movement that won rights and respect for millions of women workers – and inspired a hit movie and an enduring song along the way. After the film\, audience members will be invited to share their thoughts and questions about women and work. \nPresented in conjunction with the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven (JHSGNH)\, the screening is part of the 2026 Judith Ann Schiff Women’s History Film Series which was designed to examine the issues faced by women as clerical workers\, factory workers\, and teachers (details/schedule here). The series previews the fourth Annual Judith Ann Schiff Women’s History Program at NHM (March 1\, 2026) which will focus on Jewish women involved in organizing unions for social workers\, New Haven Public School teachers\, and Yale University clerical and technical workers in the 20th century. \nCassedy became interested in women’s rights as an office worker in the early 1970’s. “Office workers were influenced by the civil rights and women’s movements and eager to win our rights\,” she says. “We won a lot\, but there’s a long way to go. Today’s working people struggle to make ends meet and care for their families.” She adds that she hopes to inspire others to speak up.
