SUMMARY:Ridgefield History Club: The History of Olmstead Lane
DESCRIPTION:The Sept. 15 Ridgefield History Club meeting will focus on a short stretch of Ridgefield that has held more than its share of Ridgefield history. \nOlmstead Lane\, being proposed as a new town Historic District (an added West Lane district is also up for consideration)\, was home to many Olmsteads\, as well as Smiths and other early Ridgefielders\, but it’s also been a place where town officials of the 20th Century made their homes\, and where a man who rescued some of the most renowned artists and writers from the Nazis once lived. It’s also where screen actors enjoyed gardening and a pop star found a refuge for a few years. \nJack Sanders\, town historian and resident of Olmstead Lane for more that 54 years\, will give an illustrated talk about the street he calls home (where the first town historian\, Dick Venus\, also lived for many years) at the 10 a.m. meeting on Tuesday\, Sept. 15\, at the Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. \nRidgefield History Club is an informal gathering where participants are encouraged to take part in the conversation. It’s presented by the Ridgefield Historical Society and is free; reservations are requested online here because space is limited. \nEach session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to our YouTube channel. Everyone is invited\, just bring your curiosity and your love of history. Some attend every month\, while others join when a topic holds special meaning for them. Longtime Ridgefield residents and newcomers alike are welcome. This free program is a wonderful way to connect with others and discover new insights into our town’s heritage.

SUMMARY:THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to the Osborne Homestead Museum on Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\, at 2pm for a specialized tour to learn about the importance of literacy through the life of Wesleyan scholar\, Civil War major\, industrial business leader\, and father/co-founder of Derby Neck Library\, Wilbur Fisk Osborne. \nWilbur Osborne spoke to his community through his speeches but also indirectly to the viewer through photos. This event is meant to serve as an encouragement to dedicate more time in a good book. We will be providing free books from Derby Neck Library that you may take home. All age groups are welcome. \nThe Osborne Homestead Museum\, a facility of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s State Parks & Public Outreach Division\, is open for free docent-led and self-guided tours on Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue off Rte. 34 in Derby\, CT. SUMMARY:Opening Reception of “Making his Mark in Connecticut: The Creative Process of F. Luis Mora”
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the opening reception of “Making his Mark in Connecticut: The Creative Process of F. Luis Mora.” To commemorate the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, the HMA presents this exhibition\, which explores the themes of the America 250 | CT Commission through the lens of an Uruguayan-born artist who settled in Gaylordsville\, CT. Featuring never-before-seen preparatory drawings alongside finished paintings\, this exhibition tells the origin story of the first Hispanic member of the National Academy of Design and his legacy in his adopted state. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Cynthia Roznoy with key loans from the collection of Benjamin Ortiz and Victor P. Torchia\, Jr. and George Wall. The exhibition also includes loans from major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Yale University Art Gallery\, the Mattatuck Museum\, the Florence Griswold Museum\, the Georgia Museum of Art\, and the Rockwell Museum. \nFree and open to the public; light refreshments served. \nThis project is supported by funding through CT Humanities\, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art\, and America 250 | CT.
