DESCRIPTION:Battle of Ridgefield 250th approaches; Bus tour to explore battlefield route and new discoveries \nAs the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield approaches\, the Ridgefield Historical Society is offering a rare opportunity to travel the route of the British troops and hear firsthand about archaeological discoveries that have transformed our understanding of the battle. \n\nBattlefield historian and archaeologist Dr. David Naumec\, who worked on the Ridgefield Historical Society’s two National Park Service battlefield research projects\, will narrate a bus tour following the route taken by British troops from Danbury through Ridgefield on April 27\, 1777. Along the way\, he will highlight key engagements\, archaeological discoveries\, and new evidence that has expanded knowledge of how the Battle of Ridgefield unfolded. \nThe Battle of Ridgefield Bus Tour will take place Sunday\, Oct. 18\, starting at 10 a.m. from the Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Space aboard the bus is very limited\, making this a special opportunity to experience the battlefield landscape with one of the historians directly involved in its recent investigation. The tour is expected to last about 90 minutes. \nThe Scott House itself has a connection to the events of April 27\, 1777. In its original location on Main Street\, the 1714 saltbox stood near some of the heaviest fighting of the battle. Today\, as headquarters of the Ridgefield Historical Society\, it sits within another area associated with the battle. \n\nA historian\, archaeologist and museum consultant\, Dr. Naumec was named Historic New England’s Revolution 250 Research Scholar\, studying New England’s Indigenous and African American Revolutionary War veterans. A graduate of UConn\, he holds a master’s degree in History and Museum Studies from Tufts University and a PhD in Race and Ethnicity in Early America through the Civil War from Clark University. His research interests include Native American history\, colonial North America\, Connecticut history and battlefield archaeology. He is museum manager of the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House and Lighthouse Museum with Historic Stonington. \nTickets are limited\, nonrefundable\, and are expected to sell out quickly

DESCRIPTION:What do Halloween\, witch hunts\, an English King\, pallbearers\, Leviticus\, and public education have in common? \nThe answer to that puzzle will be the focus of the Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, Oct. 20\, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Susan Kweskin will lead an illustrated group discussion on Connecticut’s dark past\, its own witch trials\, the people who fueled them\, and their enduring impact. Deeply ingrained beliefs\, fears\, and cultural habits of the Connecticut colonists didn’t vanish with the 18th century — they continue to shape our laws\, holiday traditions\, and even our daily lives in Ridgefield. \nExamination of a Witch (1853) by T. H. Matteson\, inspired by the Salem trials\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The group meets for an hour on the third Tuesday of every month to explore a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history through shared conversation. \nEach session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to the Society’s YouTube channel. Everyone is invited—just bring your curiosity and love of history. Some attend every month\, while others join when a topic holds special meaning for them. Longtime Ridgefield residents and newcomers alike are welcome. This free program is a wonderful way to connect with others and discover new insights into the town’s heritage.

Driven by a severe shortage of legal cadavers for medical training\, professional “ghouls” built a lucrative seasonal industry by secretly exhuming fresh corpses from local burial sites. \nThis illicit trade disproportionately targeted marginalized communities\, igniting public fury and violent “anatomy riots\,” including New York City’s massive 1788 uprising. While families fought back with creative defensive measures to protect their dead\, the grim business of body snatching persisted for generations\, until modern anatomy laws and shifting medical practices claimed to shut it down. Or did they?
