SUMMARY:Ridgefield History Club Explores Stonehenge Inn’s Golden Age
DESCRIPTION:The glamour and excitement of Ridgefield’s famed Stonehenge Inn during the 1950s will be the focus of the Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, Nov. 17\, at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Historical Society board member Keith Russell will lead an illustrated group discussion\, “Clarence Korker’s The Golden Age of Stonehenge – The 1950s\,” featuring recently digitized photographs of the inn’s celebrated guests\, staff and social life\, including entertainers Judy Garland and Jackie Cooper. \nClarence “Korky” Korker documented Ridgefield from the mid- to late 20th century through thousands of photographs and negatives. After retiring\, he donated his extensive collection to the Ridgefield Historical Society. Russell has been gradually digitizing the images and adding them to the Society’s online archive. The collection ranges from portraits\, weddings and community gatherings to streetscapes\, commercial buildings and celebrities visiting Stonehenge Inn. \nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The group meets for an hour on the third Tuesday of every month to explore a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history through shared conversation. \nEach session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to the Society’s YouTube channel. Everyone is invited—just bring your curiosity and love of history. Some attend every month\, while others join when a topic holds special meaning for them. Longtime Ridgefield residents and newcomers alike are welcome. This free program is a wonderful way to connect with others and discover new insights into the town’s heritage.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation with author Joel Nelson\, to celebrate the release of his book\, Kennedy’s Only Hero. \nThe surprising story of how John F. Kennedy’s obsession with Winston Churchill defined his life\, transformed his politics\, and helped elevate him to the nation’s highest office. \n“A fascinating and discerning exploration of how one iconic twentieth-century leader helped shape the rhetoric and political persona of another.” -Fredrik Logevall\, author of JFK \nWinston Churchill remains one of the modern age’s most revered leaders. His life has been the subject of decades of mythmaking and scrutiny\, and yet few know the powerful sway he had over another twentieth-century political icon—John F. Kennedy. Drawing on deep wells of unpublished archival material\, Kennedy’s Only Hero uncovers Kennedy’s obsession with Churchill\, whose career\, policies\, writings\, and even daily habits profoundly shaped the future president. \nKennedy discovered Churchill’s books as a teenager and by his early twenties had become an unswerving believer in his brilliance. Under Churchill’s influence\, Kennedy rejected his own youthful isolationism and adopted the approach to national and international politics that propelled him to the presidency. Although they would not meet until late in their lives\, Churchill’s influence on Kennedy’s campaign tactics\, speeches\, and worldview was overwhelming. Kennedy’s conviction in the power of peace through strength\, his faith in summits\, his understanding of the importance of rhetoric\, and his deep commitment to service and global engagement—all came from Churchill. \nKennedy’s Only Hero is an enlightening and deeply human story of an admiration and aspiration that changed the course of history. \nJoel Nelson is a British writer and historian. He took a first-class honours degree in History at Jesus College\, Oxford\, in 2016\, and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge in 2017. He subsequently worked as an advisor to Rory Stewart\, an editor at Foreign Affairs\, and as Director of European Policy at an AI think-tank in Washington\, D.C. \nIn 2020\, Joel won a Kennedy Scholarship and\, knowing almost nothing about the man the scholarship was named for\, bought a recently published biography of JFK. Fascinated by the book’s occasional references to Kennedy’s interest in Churchill\, he decided to research the subject. Joel discovered a trove of material in archives on both sides of the Atlantic\, and spent the following five years researching and writing his account of Kennedy’s obsession.  Kennedy’s Only Hero is the result.
