DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Looking for History\, join exhibiting artist Rick Shaefer for a guided tour of Colossi on Thursday\, August 20\, at 6pm. \nDuring this one-hour walkthrough\, Shaefer will lead Museum visitors through the exhibition\, sharing insights into the inspiration\, historical references\, and creative methods that inform the works on view. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion about the artist’s concepts\, materials\, and techniques. \nShaefer’s exhibition at MoCACT includes selections from three ongoing bodies of work: the Colossi\, Refugee Trilogy\, and Liberty Dismantled series. These works collectively examine the transhistorical themes of migration\, displacement\, national identity\, and the tension between ideals of freedom and the realities of division. \nAlso on view are two short videos that offer a close read of two major drawings from the Colossi series\, The New Colossus and Siege. The videos\, created specifically for this exhibition\, offer visitors a deeper understanding of the historical precedents\, symbolism\, and formal techniques that shape the artist’s practice. Together\, these works invite reflection on the structures — both physical and metaphorical — that impact our world and our relationships with one another. SUMMARY:A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of the American Revolution on July 5\, 2026\, 12 – 4 p.m.\, during “A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House.” Reenactors from the 54th Regiment of Foot—a rousting band of Redcoats—will return to the site of the Morris house which was burned to the ground by the British during their raid on New Haven on July 5\, 1779. (There’s no telling how the local 6th CT Regiment will respond to the Brits returning… ) Weather updates for the this free NH250 event will be posted on FB/IG and newhavenmuseum.org. \n“A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House” will provide a full afternoon of revolutionary fun. The 54th Rgt. will demonstrate the life of a British soldier\, showcasing traditional drills and demonstrating the firing of muskets. The regiment’s18th-century “surgeon” will demonstrate his skills\, helping visitors gain new appreciation for 21st-century medicine! \nReenactors from the 6th CT Rgt. will set aside any remaining animosities while they showcase their own traditional drills\, and the cleaning and firing of muskets. A lieutenant will detail the contents of a continental soldier’s knapsack\, and kids can join in a mock drill with wooden muskets. \nVisitors are welcome to bring picnics and chairs. The Inferno Apizza truck will also be onsite\, and snacks will also be available for purchase \nSteve Salisbury\, proprietor of the Big Bear Trading Company\, will set up shop as an 18th-century sutler\, selling to modern-day visitors some of the tools\, trinkets\, eating utensils\, and miscellaneous goods that were popular in the 1700s. \nVisitors may also tour the PMH Colonial Herb Garden. University of Connecticut-certified Master Gardener Giulia Gambale will invite guests to touch and smell clippings of herbs and discuss their use during colonial times. \nThe Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard will perform spirited fife-and-drum music throughout the afternoon. Visitors will also enjoy crafts\, creating lavender sachet bags and paper tri-corn hats. Colonial games for all ages will include rolling hoops\, graces\, and cup-and-ball. \nIn 1779\, British Major General William Tryon led 2700 soldiers in raids on the port towns of New Haven\, Fairfield\,Westport and Norwalk\, Connecticut. “A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House” is the first in the “1779 British Raids\,” event series (July 5-12\, 2026)\, a collaborative effort by the New Haven Museum\, Fairfield Museum\, Westport Museum for History and Culture\, and Norwalk Historical Society to commemorate the historic raids. The “1779 British Raids” events will allow the public to follow in the footsteps of British forces and discover the stories of how each town fought back. \nNew Haven Museum thanks the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut for supporting the program\, and WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the 2026 summer season.

DESCRIPTION:4th of July is back on the Steps of Hoyt-Barnum\, Stamford’s oldest dwelling\, celebrating 250 years of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\,  and Rick Petersen returns as your guide as General Putnam at 10 am sharp! He will be traveling through time to invite some notable figures throughout history including Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady-Stanton\, who will be delivering their famous speeches.  We will also be offering tours of the Hoyt-Barnum House. \nOur cast is outfitted by Sophia’s Costumes and Gifts in Cos Cob. Cabaret performer Mel McGuire returns to sing the National Anthem with Cabaret flair. Please bring chairs\, and additional parking is available in the Northeast Middle School parking lot.

SUMMARY:State Historian Andy Horowitz: Why Connecticut 250 Matters  at New Haven Museum
DESCRIPTION:“The past created the present\, so if we want to know why things are the way they are\, we need to understand history\,” says State Historian Andy Horowitz. In a freewheeling lecture\, “Why Connecticut 250 Matters\,” Horowitz will explore how the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States offers a prism for making sense of the present and the future. The special NH250 event will be at the New Haven Museum on Wednesday\, July 1\, 2026\, at 6 p.m. Reception at 5:30 p.m. Free with regular museum admission\, register here. \nHorowitz will begin with an account of how the American Revolution mattered to people – European\, African\, and American; men and women; rich and poor; free and enslaved – in Connecticut 250 years ago. “I prepared this talk with two kinds of people in mind\,” Horowitz says. “The first are people who already care about Connecticut history; the second are people who think Connecticut’s history is boring. For both groups\, I’m bringing stories they won’t have heard before\, at least not this way.” He adds that the “shockingly interesting combination of people who comprised Connecticut in the 1770s can give us a necessary perspective on our contemporary period of pluralism and discord.” \n“As state historian\, my goal is always to convince people that Connecticut’s history is worthy of attention – but that’s especially so now\, when the study of history is so politically fraught and scrutinized from every quarter\, and when national issues threaten to overwrite local ones\, “ Horowitz says. “We need to rebuild our national narrative\, but that story has to start at home\, with true stories that expand our sense of who we are and what our local communities are capable of.” \nHorowitz’s lecture will be a fitting companion piece to the NHM’s new exhibition\, “New Haven’s Unfinished Revolutions\,” which offers an immersive environment exploring key moments when freedoms were expanded or restricted in New Haven. The exhibition includes original objects\, enlarged photographs\, and an exciting interactive that connects visitors to New Haven’s role in national movements that transformed ideas about human rights and liberty. Visitors are welcome to arrive early\, review the exhibition\, and stay for the reception and lecture.
