SUMMARY:Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum to Commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with New Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will open a new exhibition titled\, Revolutionary Roots: Generations of Change\, on June 11\, 2026\, 2-4 p.m. followed by a reception from 5:30–7:30 p.m.  Revolutionary Roots is curated by Museum Consultant Stacey Danielson with the assistance of LMMM Volunteer and Curatorial Researcher Midge Lopat and will run through October 3\, 2026. \n“The exhibition will examine the American Revolution through the 18th-century history of the Lockwood and Mathews families as new research reveals untold stories of their Patriot ancestors who fought for America’s independence\,” said Ms. Danielson. \nFeatured figures will include Norwalk’s Captain Eliphalet Lockwood\, whose home was destroyed by the British while he served in the Connecticut Militia; and Lieutenant Colonel Sampson Mathews\, who served in the Virigina Militia and was a vital member of the Committee of Safety. Through period costumes\, artifacts\, and didactic panels\, this exhibit will illustrate their poignant experiences during the Revolutionary War. \nLMMM’s 2026 programs are made possible in part by LMMM’s 2026 Season Distinguished Benefactors: The City of Norwalk\, The Maurice Goodman Foundation\, Inc.\, and Lockwood-Mathews Foundation\, Inc.; LMMM’s Leadership Patrons: Dr. Michele and Attorney Miklos Koleszar; and The Sealark Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Stanley-Whitman House on Sunday\, May 17\, at 2:00 PM for A Tale of Two Coats\, a living-history presentation featuring historian and author Dayne Rugh as Colonel John Durkee: soldier\, Son of Liberty\, and one of Connecticut’s most forgotten Revolutionary heroes. \nRugh will open in character\, presenting in the first person as Colonel Durkee in period regimental clothing for thirty minutes\, bringing the Revolutionary era to life inside a c. 1720 National Historic Landmark. He will then step out of character for an illustrated presentation drawing on his biography\, John Durkee: The Forgotten Story of Connecticut’s Bold Man from Bean Hill\, the first definitive account of a Norwich-born colonel who served under General Washington\, fought in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution\, and helped shape the course of a nation. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at $20.00. \nRegistration is free. DESCRIPTION:– Join Windor Historical Society Program Manager Heather Lodge and Windsor Director of Economic Development Patrick McMahon on May 2 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. for a Jane’s Walk of the Windsor Broad Street Green. \nOn the first weekend of May every year\, Jane’s Walks take place in hundreds of towns and cities around the world to encourage people to share stories about their neighborhoods\, discover unseen aspects of their communities\, and connect with their neighbors. \nIn tandem with the Windsor CT 250 commemorations\, this Jane’s Walk will focus on the civic actions that happened on the town green over the last 250 years. Together we will learn about the protests\, parties\, and civic activities that took place in the town center that helped shape who we are as a community. \n“The town green is often the civic heart of a New England community\,” says Windsor Historical Society program manager\, Heather Lodge. “It is a space that belongs to no one and everyone. DESCRIPTION:“Keeping It All in the Family: A Conversation with Modern Apizza’s Bill Pustari\,” will take place on Thursday\, April 2\, 2026\, at 6 pm\, at the New Haven Museum (NHM). The talk is the latest offering in “The Monthly Slice” series of programs at NHM\, presented in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition\, “Pronounced Ah-Beetz.” Free with regular museum admission. Register here. \nModerated by Gorman Bechard\, director of “Pizza A Love Story\,” the discussion offers an opportunity to ask questions of one of the premier pizza makers in the world. Pustari grew up as a pizza man and went to what he likes to call “pizza university.” He bought Modern Apizza in 1988 and turned it into a nationally recognized pizza restaurant. \nModern has consistently been ranked as one of the 10 best pizzerias in the country\, and one of the “Big Three” in New Haven. “Pizza Today” magazine named Modern the 2023 Pizzeria of the Year. Having always kept it a family affair\, Pustari runs Modern with the help of his wife Mary\, and their children\, William and Arianna\, and a dedicated staff\, many of whom have been with Pustari for decades. \nThe “Pronounced Ah-Beetz” exhibition at NHM includes first-hand oral histories and pizza-related artifacts from personal collections\, video footage adapted from the documentary and photographs. The exhibition’s title comes from the way many people mispronounce the word apizza\, which originally grew out of the Italian la pizza. The exhibition will remain on view through October 2027.
