DESCRIPTION:4th of July is back on the Steps of Hoyt-Barnum\, Stamford’s oldest dwelling\, celebrating 250 years of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\,  and Rick Petersen returns as your guide as General Putnam at 10 am sharp! He will be traveling through time to invite some notable figures throughout history including Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady-Stanton\, who will be delivering their famous speeches.  We will also be offering tours of the Hoyt-Barnum House. \nOur cast is outfitted by Sophia’s Costumes and Gifts in Cos Cob. Cabaret performer Mel McGuire returns to sing the National Anthem with Cabaret flair. Please bring chairs\, and additional parking is available in the Northeast Middle School parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:Windsor Historical Society invites the public to the opening reception of its new exhibition\, “These Hands\, This Leaf: Leonard Hellerman’s Photographs of Windsor’s Tobacco Workers\,” Wednesday\, June 24\, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the community\, and registration is encouraged. \nTobacco has long defined Windsor\, which is recognized as the heart of the Connecticut Tobacco Valley. This exhibit presents an intimate portrait of the skilled workers who built that legacy\, captured by Windsor photographer Dr. Leonard Hellerman. \nOne of Hellerman’s favorite subjects is Connecticut River Valley shade-grown tobacco (used mainly for premium cigars) cultivated under white cloth. “I have likely taken more photographs in shade tobacco fields than anyone\,” Hellerman said. Growing tobacco from seed to harvest requires months of skilled labor and care\, and he’s been there photographing every step. \n“Years ago\, I was given permission by [the Thrall family] to photograph their workers\, fields\, and sheds\,” Hellerman said. DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will open a new exhibition titled\, Revolutionary Roots: Generations of Change\, on June 11\, 2026\, 2-4 p.m. followed by a reception from 5:30–7:30 p.m.  Revolutionary Roots is curated by Museum Consultant Stacey Danielson with the assistance of LMMM Volunteer and Curatorial Researcher Midge Lopat and will run through October 3\, 2026. \n“The exhibition will examine the American Revolution through the 18th-century history of the Lockwood and Mathews families as new research reveals untold stories of their Patriot ancestors who fought for America’s independence\,” said Ms. Danielson. \nFeatured figures will include Norwalk’s Captain Eliphalet Lockwood\, whose home was destroyed by the British while he served in the Connecticut Militia; and Lieutenant Colonel Sampson Mathews\, who served in the Virigina Militia and was a vital member of the Committee of Safety. Through period costumes\, artifacts\, and didactic panels\, this exhibit will illustrate their poignant experiences during the Revolutionary War. \nLMMM’s 2026 programs are made possible in part by LMMM’s 2026 Season Distinguished Benefactors: The City of Norwalk\, The Maurice Goodman Foundation\, Inc.\, and Lockwood-Mathews Foundation\, Inc.; LMMM’s Leadership Patrons: Dr. Michele and Attorney Miklos Koleszar; and The Sealark Foundation. DESCRIPTION:“Broteer” Venture Smith\nMay 17\, 2026 · 3 p.m.\nGarden House \nVenture Smith was a Connecticut captive born in West Africa in 1729. When he arrived in America as a child\, he was forced to work on farms in Rhode Island\, New York\, and Connecticut. Broteer’s story is especially compelling: he was able to purchase his freedom along with that of his family; he became a successful businessman; and he narrated his own story\, telling of his childrehood in Africa\, the horrific Middle Passage\, his captivity\, and freedom. The Broteer Venture Smith Project combines history\, genealogy\, genetics\, and archaeology with hopes of discovering more about his life. In this presentation\, Connecticut State Archeologist Emeritus Dr. Nicholas F. Bellantoni tells of Broteer\, his life and times\, and the DNA project initiated by his descendants. \nTickets to go on sale in 2026. \nBellantoni serves as the emeritus state archaeologist with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History at the University of Connecticut. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in 1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. His duties primarily included the preservation of archaeological sites in the state. He serves as an adjunct associate research professor in the department of anthropology at UConn and resided as former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archaeologists. \nBellantoni’s research background includes the forensic archaeology and faunal analysis from eastern North America. He is the author a number of books written for the general public: The Long Journeys Home: The Repatriation of Henry Opukaha’ia and Albert Afraid of Hawk; “And So The Tomb Remained”: Exploring Archaeology and Forensic Science Within Connecticut’s Historical Family Mausolea; Archaeology Without Digging: Connecticut History Uncovered By Ground-Penetrating Radar; and Hiking Ruins of Southern New England: A Guide to 40 Sites in Connecticut\, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Stanley-Whitman House on Sunday\, May 17\, at 2:00 PM for A Tale of Two Coats\, a living-history presentation featuring historian and author Dayne Rugh as Colonel John Durkee: soldier\, Son of Liberty\, and one of Connecticut’s most forgotten Revolutionary heroes. \nRugh will open in character\, presenting in the first person as Colonel Durkee in period regimental clothing for thirty minutes\, bringing the Revolutionary era to life inside a c. 1720 National Historic Landmark. He will then step out of character for an illustrated presentation drawing on his biography\, John Durkee: The Forgotten Story of Connecticut’s Bold Man from Bean Hill\, the first definitive account of a Norwich-born colonel who served under General Washington\, fought in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution\, and helped shape the course of a nation. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at $20.00. \nRegistration is free.
