SUMMARY:Jazz and the Spoken Word at New Haven Museum
DESCRIPTION:“Jazz and the Spoken Word\,” a rich tradition where the syncopated rhythms of jazz merge with the cadence of spoken poetry\, will bring area artists together in an exciting new collaboration between Jazz Haven and The New Haven Museum on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026 at 2 p.m. Free with regular museum admission\, register here. \nThe art of spoken word has become an important component of Jazz Haven’s mission to explore the full breadth of the culture of jazz\, says organizer and drummer Jesse Hameen II. “This format brings together poets\, musicians\, photographers\, painters and other artists whose works are influenced by the jazz experience in America.” \nThe master musicians performing that evening include Hameen on drums\, Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere on bass\, Will Cleary on saxophone and Darren Litzie on piano. Spoken-word artists Kate Rushin\, Shaunda Holloway\, Craig O’Connell\, Frank Cochran and Stanley Welch will perform original works and recitations of famous jazz poetry to the swinging grooves. The event will also include an invitation to the greater spoken-word community to participate. \nHameen says the art of spoken word has long been associated with jazz. He notes that one of the earliest and most famous examples of the spoken word and jazz is “The Weary Blues\,” a 1925 composition by Langston Hughes recited by the poet over jazz arrangements by Charles Mingus in 1958. \nOther famous spoken-word jazz collaborations include those by Gil Scott Heron\, often called the “Godfather of Modern Rap\,” Jon Hendricks\, the “Poet Laureate of Jazz\,” stand-up comedian Lord Buckley\, poet Amiri Baraka and more. \n“Spoken word is not a passive experience\, but rather an active engagement between the speaker/poet and jazz musicians\,” Hameen says. “It may include poetry\, talking voices\, scat\, African chanting\, vocalese or other renderings that can be incorporated with jazz rhythms and improvisation.”

SUMMARY:Witch Trials\, Blue Laws\, and the Tooth Fairy: The Legacy of Colonial Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:What do Halloween\, witch hunts\, an English King\, pallbearers\, Leviticus\, and public education have in common? \nThe answer to that puzzle will be the focus of the Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, Oct. 20\, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Susan Kweskin will lead an illustrated group discussion on Connecticut’s dark past\, its own witch trials\, the people who fueled them\, and their enduring impact. Deeply ingrained beliefs\, fears\, and cultural habits of the Connecticut colonists didn’t vanish with the 18th century — they continue to shape our laws\, holiday traditions\, and even our daily lives in Ridgefield. \nExamination of a Witch (1853) by T. H. Matteson\, inspired by the Salem trials\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The group meets for an hour on the third Tuesday of every month to explore a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history through shared conversation. \nEach session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to the Society’s YouTube channel. Everyone is invited—just bring your curiosity and love of history. Some attend every month\, while others join when a topic holds special meaning for them. Longtime Ridgefield residents and newcomers alike are welcome. This free program is a wonderful way to connect with others and discover new insights into the town’s heritage.

SUMMARY:Ridgefield History Club Explores Stonehenge Inn’s Golden Age
DESCRIPTION:The glamour and excitement of Ridgefield’s famed Stonehenge Inn during the 1950s will be the focus of the Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, Nov. 17\, at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Historical Society board member Keith Russell will lead an illustrated group discussion\, “Clarence Korker’s The Golden Age of Stonehenge – The 1950s\,” featuring recently digitized photographs of the inn’s celebrated guests\, staff and social life\, including entertainers Judy Garland and Jackie Cooper. \nClarence “Korky” Korker documented Ridgefield from the mid- to late 20th century through thousands of photographs and negatives. After retiring\, he donated his extensive collection to the Ridgefield Historical Society. Russell has been gradually digitizing the images and adding them to the Society’s online archive. The collection ranges from portraits\, weddings and community gatherings to streetscapes\, commercial buildings and celebrities visiting Stonehenge Inn. \nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society.
