DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the opening reception of “Making his Mark in Connecticut: The Creative Process of F. Luis Mora.” To commemorate the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, the HMA presents this exhibition\, which explores the themes of the America 250 | CT Commission through the lens of an Uruguayan-born artist who settled in Gaylordsville\, CT. Featuring never-before-seen preparatory drawings alongside finished paintings\, this exhibition tells the origin story of the first Hispanic member of the National Academy of Design and his legacy in his adopted state. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Cynthia Roznoy with key loans from the collection of Benjamin Ortiz and Victor P. Torchia\, Jr. and George Wall. The exhibition also includes loans from major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Yale University Art Gallery\, the Mattatuck Museum\, the Florence Griswold Museum\, the Georgia Museum of Art\, and the Rockwell Museum. \nFree and open to the public; light refreshments served. \nThis project is supported by funding through CT Humanities\, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art\, and America 250 | CT. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Looking for History\, join exhibiting artist Rick Shaefer for a guided tour of Colossi on Thursday\, August 20\, at 6pm. \nDuring this one-hour walkthrough\, Shaefer will lead Museum visitors through the exhibition\, sharing insights into the inspiration\, historical references\, and creative methods that inform the works on view. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion about the artist’s concepts\, materials\, and techniques. \nShaefer’s exhibition at MoCACT includes selections from three ongoing bodies of work: the Colossi\, Refugee Trilogy\, and Liberty Dismantled series. These works collectively examine the transhistorical themes of migration\, displacement\, national identity\, and the tension between ideals of freedom and the realities of division. \nAlso on view are two short videos that offer a close read of two major drawings from the Colossi series\, The New Colossus and Siege. The videos\, created specifically for this exhibition\, offer visitors a deeper understanding of the historical precedents\, symbolism\, and formal techniques that shape the artist’s practice. SUMMARY:Exploring the Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive: Preserving Folklife Through Sound
DESCRIPTION:Join Fairfield Public Library for a fascinating lecture with folklorist and researcher Derek Piotr\, founder of The Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive. \nThe Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive was established by Derek Piotr in August 2022. The Archive contains over 1\,500 audio recordings made from March 2020 onward\, and preserves diverse representations of folklife; ballads\, hymns\, tales\, poems\, children’s songs\, and interviews among them. The focus of this collection is on the “non-singer”: someone with no background in musical performance who can nevertheless relate a song or folkloric memory. In this lecture\, Derek will walk you through the process of journeying everywhere from Iceland to Appalachia to record these songs from non-musicians\, as well as the organization and development of the Archive as a web-based repository. \nPlease register.

DESCRIPTION:THE FATHER is a psychologically immersive play that uniquely puts the audience in the position of the main character\, allowing us to experience his confusion as if it were our own. We never know what’s true or real.  \nTold with humor and empathy\, and by shrewd manipulation\, audiences are treated to a heart-wrenching glimpse of the despair of memory loss.  NOT TO BE MISSED!  \nTHE FATHER (Le Père) is the winner of the 2014 Molière Award for Best Play. The Molières are considered France’s highest theatrical honour.   THE FATHER premiered on Broadway in 2016 with Frank Langella winning the TONY AWARD for BEST ACTOR\, and was transferred to screen with Anthony Hopkins winning the BEST ACTOR OSCAR for his performance.  \nThe Father is a darkly humorous\, deeply poignant and unsentimental play\, presenting a sobering and emotionally intense look at the world through the eyes of a man experiencing dementia\, with a dramatic illustration of the physical losses which occur along with the mental ones.

DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival\, titled “Voices of Freedom: Resistance\, Justice\, and Revolution\,” will be held April 9-12 at locations both on and off Trinity College’s campus at 300 Summit Street\, Hartford.
