SUMMARY:The Roots of Democracy in Hartford: Annual Meeting & Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Ancient Burying Ground Association presents a lecture on democracy’s roots in Hartford. Erin Monroe\, the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture\, will speak about The Wadsworth’s latest exhibition\, Framing American Democracy: Radical Roots. She will discuss the connections between the Ancient Burying Ground and the exhibit. The museum’s founder\, Daniel Wadsworth\, was the heir of Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth\, a statesman\, business leader\, and veteran of the American Revolution. Daniel placed a monument to his father and family in the Ancient Burying Ground. The burial ground also hosts tablestones in honor of Hartford’s colonial founders\, including Rev. Thomas Hooker. Discover how Hooker and others laid the foundation for democracy in America. The lecture will be preceded by the Annual Meeting. \nErin Monroe is the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Wadsworth. She has been in the American art department in various capacities since 2007. Monroe is responsible for an extensive collection that encompasses colonial portraiture\, Hudson River School landscapes\, neoclassical sculpture\, American modernism\, and works on paper. SUMMARY:Three Lighthouses Off New London at the Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:Lighthouses have safeguarded mariners for centuries. Many are cherished historic landmarks—beacons that symbolize hope\, safety\, guidance\, and enduring strength—including three majestic examples on the Connecticut coast owned by the New London Maritime Society (NLMS). Susan Tamulevich\, executive director of NLMS\, will share the colorful histories of the treasured lighthouses during a free NH250 event\, “Three Lighthouses Off New London\,” at the Pardee-Morris House on Sunday\, June 21\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. Register here. For weather updates check our Facebook/Instagram pages or visit newhavenmuseum.org. \nBeginning in 2009\, the NLMS assumed ownership of three historic beacons that guided vessels from the Atlantic into the port of New London in southeastern Long Island Sound: New London Harbor Light—established in 1761 and the oldest and tallest lighthouse on the Sound; Race Rock Light Station—constructed in the 1870s off Fishers Island\, a remarkable engineering achievement in the turbulent waters known as “the Race”; and New London Ledge Lighthouse—the 1909 brick ‘house’ affectionately called “Point Alpha” by Groton-based submariners. NLMS restores and maintains the three lighthouses and keeps them accessible to the public. \nTamulevich notes that as GPS technology supplanted the role of lighthouses as navigational aids\, a significant number of the structures have deteriorated due to neglect and the effects of climate change\, while others are being sold off to private owners. Thankfully\, the 2000 National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act recognizes the cultural\, recreational\, and educational value of historic light stations. Since its enactment\, more than 150 lighthouse properties have been transferred to new stewards\, helping to ensure their preservation for future generations. \nNew Haven Museum thanks community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the 2026 summer season.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Windsor Human Relations Commission and Windsor Historical Society for an afternoon of joy\, culture\, and community on the historic Palisado Green. Starting at 4 p.m.\, enjoy family-friendly crafts\, engaging story readings\, a bounce house\, lively performances by Magic Soul Academy drumline\, and delicious food from fantastic local food trucks. Come celebrate freedom\, history\, and togetherness with your friends and neighbors! \nAt 7 p.m.\, gather around a fire on grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor\, and take part in our annual audience-led firelight reading. This year’s reading is Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 essay\, “Liberty Further Extended.” Born in West Hartford in 1753\, Haynes was America’s first Black ordained minister. In this contemporary response to the Declaration of Independence\, Haynes argues against slavery\, calls out the hypocrisy of American’s war for “independence\,” and advocates for a better\, freer future. Participants are welcome to either take part and read the words or listen and reflect on this important piece of abolitionist history. \nBoth programs are outside. In the case of heavy rain\, both programs will be moved indoors to Windsor Historical Society facilities. \nThis program is part of Windsor Historical Society’s WindsorCT250 commemoration activities. SUMMARY:“Whales\, Whaling\, and Whalemen” at the Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:The global whale population was decimated by the 20th century due to commercial whaling. Thankfully\, fragile whale populations are now actively recovering. Mystic Seaport Museum Education Specialist Anthony Riccio says understanding how we got to this point is important\, especially for anyone with an interest or connection to the sea. Riccio will bring his whale knowledge and some hands-on whaling artifacts to the Pardee-Morris House during\, “Whales\, Whaling\, and Whalemen\,” on Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. Register for the free NH250 program here. Weather updates are posted on Facebook\, Instagram and www.newhavenmuseum.org. \nDuring his presentation\, Riccio will take an in-depth look at New England’s lost industry\, the whaling trade. From colonial origins to economic heights in the 19th century\, Riccio will highlight the mechanics of the whaling craft as well as the individuals who sustained the trade for over two centuries. \nRiccio will untangle the nuances of whaling in the 19th century\, as conducted by the crew of the Charles W. Morgan\, a whaling vessel now located at Mystic Seaport Museum\, in comparison to the heavily industrialized practices of 20th-century whalers. He hopes the public will feel a greater connection to the stories of the sailors themselves\, noting\, “Even though life at sea is very different from life ashore\, I think we can find common ground.” \nRiccio will also discuss direct and indirect connections to whaling in New Haven. He cites the Henry expedition\, partially funded by Eli Whitney\, which sailed in the 1820s to help open Pacific whaling grounds. He notes that the commercial products of whaling—oil and baleen—were even more prevalent than ships in 19th-century New Haven. \n“Living in Connecticut\, with its incredible array of cultural resources\, has made it possible and easy for me to access stories and sources related to this topic\,” Riccio says. “And my work as a museum professional at Mystic Seaport Museum has immersed me in our regional whaling history.” \nVisitors are welcome to bring chairs and picnics and stay for the afternoon. DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will open a new exhibition titled\, Revolutionary Roots: Generations of Change\, on June 11\, 2026\, 2-4 p.m. followed by a reception from 5:30–7:30 p.m.  Revolutionary Roots is curated by Museum Consultant Stacey Danielson with the assistance of LMMM Volunteer and Curatorial Researcher Midge Lopat and will run through October 3\, 2026. \n“The exhibition will examine the American Revolution through the 18th-century history of the Lockwood and Mathews families as new research reveals untold stories of their Patriot ancestors who fought for America’s independence\,” said Ms. Danielson. \nFeatured figures will include Norwalk’s Captain Eliphalet Lockwood\, whose home was destroyed by the British while he served in the Connecticut Militia; and Lieutenant Colonel Sampson Mathews\, who served in the Virigina Militia and was a vital member of the Committee of Safety. The presentation also examines the efforts of local citizens who advocated for the abolition of slavery and embraced freedom for all as a central goal of the Revolution\, shedding light on a powerful and often overlooked chapter of the city’s history. \nMuch has been written about Norwich’s participation in the American Revolution. This bustling city was known for its fervent support of the patriot cause\, contributing troops\, military leaders\, and supplies to the war effort. Introduced to calligraphy by her 5th grade teacher\, she dabbled for years until opening her own calligraphy studio in Chicago before moving to northern Connecticut. SUMMARY:The Ride: Paul Revere and the Night That Saved America
DESCRIPTION:“Listen\, my children\, and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere… ” On Saturday\, April 18\, 2026—the anniversary of the most famous horse ride in American history —author Kostya Kennedy will visit the New Haven Museum to present little-known aspects of a beloved story in\, “The Ride: Paul Revere and the Night That Saved America\,” based on his book of the same title. The free NHM250 event will be held at 2 p.m. and preceded by a reception at 1:30 p.m. Register here. \nRevere\, a Boston-based silversmith\, engraver\, and staunch anti-British political operative\, inspired the poem and legend of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.” But\, according to Kennedy\, the story of Revere’s ride to warn of approaching British troop is deeper and richer than previously assumed. “That night in in 1775 was 12 hours that changed the world\,” Kennedy says. \nRevere was not the only rider that April night in 1775\, but he was by far the most critical. The patriots’ best and most trusted “express rider\,” he had already completed at least 18 previous rides throughout New England\, disseminating intelligence about British movements. But this ride was like no other\, Kennedy asserts\, and its consequences in the months and years following—as the American Revolution transitioned from isolated skirmishes to a full-fledged war—became one of our founding tales. \n“There’s a layered story to Paul Revere’s ride\, a story that speaks directly to the tenor\, values and resolve of America’s founding\,” Kennedy says. “Without the ride the course of the nation’s history would have begun much differently than it did.” \nWorking from his dramatic new narrative of Revere’s ride\, informed by fresh primary and secondary research into archives\, family letters and diaries\, contemporary accounts\, and more\, Kennedy will show the historic event to be vastly more complex than usually portrayed. It was a coordinated ride of some 40 men that included near-disasters\, capture by British forces\, and ultimately success. While Revere was central to the ride and its plotting\, Kennedy will highlight myriad other men and women who proved crucial to the events that helped set in motion what would lead to America’s independence. He will also dispel some of the myths around the legend\, including that of Revere purportedly saying\, “The British are coming!” during the ride.
