SUMMARY:Three Lighthouses Off New London at the Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:Lighthouses have safeguarded mariners for centuries. Many are cherished historic landmarks—beacons that symbolize hope\, safety\, guidance\, and enduring strength—including three majestic examples on the Connecticut coast owned by the New London Maritime Society (NLMS). Susan Tamulevich\, executive director of NLMS\, will share the colorful histories of the treasured lighthouses during a free NH250 event\, “Three Lighthouses Off New London\,” at the Pardee-Morris House on Sunday\, June 21\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. Register here. For weather updates check our Facebook/Instagram pages or visit newhavenmuseum.org. \nBeginning in 2009\, the NLMS assumed ownership of three historic beacons that guided vessels from the Atlantic into the port of New London in southeastern Long Island Sound: New London Harbor Light—established in 1761 and the oldest and tallest lighthouse on the Sound; Race Rock Light Station—constructed in the 1870s off Fishers Island\, a remarkable engineering achievement in the turbulent waters known as “the Race”; and New London Ledge Lighthouse—the 1909 brick ‘house’ affectionately called “Point Alpha” by Groton-based submariners. NLMS restores and maintains the three lighthouses and keeps them accessible to the public. \nTamulevich notes that as GPS technology supplanted the role of lighthouses as navigational aids\, a significant number of the structures have deteriorated due to neglect and the effects of climate change\, while others are being sold off to private owners. Thankfully\, the 2000 National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act recognizes the cultural\, recreational\, and educational value of historic light stations. Since its enactment\, more than 150 lighthouse properties have been transferred to new stewards\, helping to ensure their preservation for future generations. \nNew Haven Museum thanks community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the 2026 summer season.

SUMMARY:The Roots of Democracy in Hartford: Annual Meeting & Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Ancient Burying Ground Association presents a lecture on democracy’s roots in Hartford. Erin Monroe\, the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture\, will speak about The Wadsworth’s latest exhibition\, Framing American Democracy: Radical Roots. She will discuss the connections between the Ancient Burying Ground and the exhibit. The museum’s founder\, Daniel Wadsworth\, was the heir of Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth\, a statesman\, business leader\, and veteran of the American Revolution. Daniel placed a monument to his father and family in the Ancient Burying Ground. The burial ground also hosts tablestones in honor of Hartford’s colonial founders\, including Rev. Thomas Hooker. Discover how Hooker and others laid the foundation for democracy in America. The lecture will be preceded by the Annual Meeting. \nErin Monroe is the Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Wadsworth. She has been in the American art department in various capacities since 2007. Monroe is responsible for an extensive collection that encompasses colonial portraiture\, Hudson River School landscapes\, neoclassical sculpture\, American modernism\, and works on paper. SUMMARY:Songs of Sedition and Rebellion at the Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:From the time of the Stamp Act in 1765 through the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781\, Connecticut’s seditious colonists used songs and hymns to foment rebellion\, commemorate victory\, and give thanks for preservation. Historical musician Richard Franklin Donohue will bring his spinet harpsichord to the Pardee-Morris House for a positively revolutionary performance\, “What A Glorious Crash They Made\,” on Sunday\, June 28\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. Register for the special NH250 event here. For weather updates check our Facebook/Instagram pages or visit newhavenmuseum.org. \n“What A Glorious Crash They Made” features a collection of songs and hymns published in Connecticut during the American Revolution. Donohue will sing\, sharing his original research and exploring the fiery repertoire that in the words of John Adams\, “cultivated the sensations of freedom.” \nDonohue searched historical newspaper databases to find original publications of songs that existed in Connecticut between 1768 and 1783. With newly composed lyrics for popular tunes\, the songs demonstrate the anger\, determination\, and gratitude of Connecticut’s patriot population. The program will span the Revolutionary War years with selections like John Dickinson’s “Liberty Song\,” William Billings’ “Chester\,” Andrew Law’s “Middletown\,” and popular British tunes with newer texts reflecting the cause of freedom. \nDonohue develops programs that explore the space around what he calls “the swinging door that exists between history and music.” He believes that music from any period needs to be presented with careful consideration of historical context\, instrumentation\, performance practice\, and linguistic detail. With pronunciation based on evidence left by Benjamin Franklin and Noah Webster\, and accompaniment on a spinet harpsichord\, Richard strives to create as authentic a sound as possible. \nNew Haven Museum thanks community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the 2026 summer season.

DESCRIPTION:4th of July is back on the Steps of Hoyt-Barnum\, Stamford’s oldest dwelling\, celebrating 250 years of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\,  and Rick Petersen returns as your guide as General Putnam at 10 am sharp! He will be traveling through time to invite some notable figures throughout history including Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady-Stanton\, who will be delivering their famous speeches.  We will also be offering tours of the Hoyt-Barnum House. \nOur cast is outfitted by Sophia’s Costumes and Gifts in Cos Cob. Cabaret performer Mel McGuire returns to sing the National Anthem with Cabaret flair. Please bring chairs\, and additional parking is available in the Northeast Middle School parking lot.
