SUMMARY:The Elegance and Style of Chinese Classical Dance: Intro to Liyuan Dance with Kaili Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese classical dance\, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen\, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP (Southern New England Apprenticeship Program) Mentor. \nIn this workshop\, learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance\, including expressive hand gestures\, focused eye work and facial expression\, refined walking patterns\, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance\, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions. \nParticipants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting\, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette. \nBlending movement\, history\, fashion\, and self-expression\, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life. \nWorkshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required. \nTICKETS\n$20 General Admission\n$15 Members\nFree for Member levels $150+\nCost covers all materials. \nAbout the Artist:\nKaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company\, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford\, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance\, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)\, and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. Her work has been presented at major international venues including Lincoln Center Theater\, The Joyce Theater\, Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris\, and the Palace Museum in Beijing\, as well as festivals such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. \nThis program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:– Join Windor Historical Society Program Manager Heather Lodge and Windsor Director of Economic Development Patrick McMahon on May 2 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. for a Jane’s Walk of the Windsor Broad Street Green. \nOn the first weekend of May every year\, Jane’s Walks take place in hundreds of towns and cities around the world to encourage people to share stories about their neighborhoods\, discover unseen aspects of their communities\, and connect with their neighbors. \nIn tandem with the Windsor CT 250 commemorations\, this Jane’s Walk will focus on the civic actions that happened on the town green over the last 250 years. Together we will learn about the protests\, parties\, and civic activities that took place in the town center that helped shape who we are as a community. \n“The town green is often the civic heart of a New England community\,” says Windsor Historical Society program manager\, Heather Lodge. “It is a space that belongs to no one and everyone. As such\, town greens have served for centuries as the seat of protest and celebration\, including here in Windsor. DESCRIPTION:Lifetime of Looking is a public program at the Bruce for adults experiencing cognitive decline\, such as Alzheimer’s Disease\, and their family members and caregivers. During this guided\, interactive program\, trained educators provide the opportunity for conversation and discussion through art on exhibit and creative art-making opportunities. \nPrograms take place one Thursday each month from 2–3:30pm. SUMMARY:Workshop: Calligraphy that Inspired a Nation
DESCRIPTION:Who was the calligrapher that wrote the Declaration of Independence? How did they write during the American Revolution? What tools did they use? What lettering style? Explore these questions and more in this hands-on workshop with calligrapher Debby Reelitz. Learn to write in script\, use a dip nib and ink\, and scribe a line from the Declaration of Independence. This workshop will be structured for the beginner\, but all levels of experience are encouraged to join! Suitable for ages 16 and up. This program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation. About the Artist: Debby Reelitz is a professional calligrapher in North Granby\, Connecticut. Introduced to calligraphy by her 5th grade teacher\, she dabbled for years until opening her own calligraphy studio in Chicago before moving to northern Connecticut. For more than 25 years\, she has been a professional lettering artist\, creating awards\, gifts\, commissions\, engraving\, chalkboards\, writing on walls\, teaching and much more. SUMMARY:Stamford's Mosaic of Historic Places History Talk with Wes Haynes
DESCRIPTION:Many buildings and structures that we experience daily embody stories of benchmark events\, movements and people important in Stamford’s history. The presentation will look at a sample of historic places and what they tell us about the past 250 years of local history on the eve of the next year’s national celebration of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. \nWes Haynes is a Stamford native and resident who recently retired from a 45 year career as an architectural historian and historic preservation specialist in the tri-state area. He currently serves on the boards of the Merritt Parkway Conservancy\, Emerson Hall Foundation at the Unitarian-Universalist Church\, and Adirondack Architectural heritage in upstate New York. \n$20 admission for members\, $15 for non-members.
