SUMMARY:A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of the American Revolution on July 5\, 2026\, 12 – 4 p.m.\, during “A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House.” Reenactors from the 54th Regiment of Foot—a rousting band of Redcoats—will return to the site of the Morris house which was burned to the ground by the British during their raid on New Haven on July 5\, 1779. (There’s no telling how the local 6th CT Regiment will respond to the Brits returning… ) Weather updates for the this free NH250 event will be posted on FB/IG and newhavenmuseum.org. \n“A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House” will provide a full afternoon of revolutionary fun. The 54th Rgt. will demonstrate the life of a British soldier\, showcasing traditional drills and demonstrating the firing of muskets. The regiment’s18th-century “surgeon” will demonstrate his skills\, helping visitors gain new appreciation for 21st-century medicine! \nReenactors from the 6th CT Rgt. will set aside any remaining animosities while they showcase their own traditional drills\, and the cleaning and firing of muskets. A lieutenant will detail the contents of a continental soldier’s knapsack\, and kids can join in a mock drill with wooden muskets. \nVisitors are welcome to bring picnics and chairs. The Inferno Apizza truck will also be onsite\, and snacks will also be available for purchase \nSteve Salisbury\, proprietor of the Big Bear Trading Company\, will set up shop as an 18th-century sutler\, selling to modern-day visitors some of the tools\, trinkets\, eating utensils\, and miscellaneous goods that were popular in the 1700s. \nVisitors may also tour the PMH Colonial Herb Garden. University of Connecticut-certified Master Gardener Giulia Gambale will invite guests to touch and smell clippings of herbs and discuss their use during colonial times. \nThe Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard will perform spirited fife-and-drum music throughout the afternoon. Visitors will also enjoy crafts\, creating lavender sachet bags and paper tri-corn hats. Colonial games for all ages will include rolling hoops\, graces\, and cup-and-ball. \nIn 1779\, British Major General William Tryon led 2700 soldiers in raids on the port towns of New Haven\, Fairfield\,Westport and Norwalk\, Connecticut. “A Day in the Revolution at Pardee-Morris House” is the first in the “1779 British Raids\,” event series (July 5-12\, 2026)\, a collaborative effort by the New Haven Museum\, Fairfield Museum\, Westport Museum for History and Culture\, and Norwalk Historical Society to commemorate the historic raids. The “1779 British Raids” events will allow the public to follow in the footsteps of British forces and discover the stories of how each town fought back. \nNew Haven Museum thanks the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut for supporting the program\, and WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the 2026 summer season.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Windsor Human Relations Commission and Windsor Historical Society for an afternoon of joy\, culture\, and community on the historic Palisado Green. Starting at 4 p.m.\, enjoy family-friendly crafts\, engaging story readings\, a bounce house\, lively performances by Magic Soul Academy drumline\, and delicious food from fantastic local food trucks. Come celebrate freedom\, history\, and togetherness with your friends and neighbors! \nAt 7 p.m.\, gather around a fire on grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor\, and take part in our annual audience-led firelight reading. This year’s reading is Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 essay\, “Liberty Further Extended.” Born in West Hartford in 1753\, Haynes was America’s first Black ordained minister. In this contemporary response to the Declaration of Independence\, Haynes argues against slavery\, calls out the hypocrisy of American’s war for “independence\,” and advocates for a better\, freer future. Participants are welcome to either take part and read the words or listen and reflect on this important piece of abolitionist history. \nBoth programs are outside. In the case of heavy rain\, both programs will be moved indoors to Windsor Historical Society facilities. \nThis program is part of Windsor Historical Society’s WindsorCT250 commemoration activities. This story will be brought to life as Ed Johnetta shares some of her exquisite quilts that commemorate these young women. Then\, create your own expressive collage portraits using a variety of images and materials. Each artwork will honor courage\, resilience\, and the power of learning\, and provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on how commemoration helps us understand our present moment\, and provide a foundation for a community’s ongoing vitality. SUMMARY:The Elegance and Style of Chinese Classical Dance: Intro to Liyuan Dance with Kaili Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese classical dance\, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen\, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP (Southern New England Apprenticeship Program) Mentor. \nIn this workshop\, learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance\, including expressive hand gestures\, focused eye work and facial expression\, refined walking patterns\, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance\, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions. \nParticipants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting\, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette. \nBlending movement\, history\, fashion\, and self-expression\, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life. \nWorkshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required. \nTICKETS\n$20 General Admission\n$15 Members\nFree for Member levels $150+\nCost covers all materials. \nAbout the Artist:\nKaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company\, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford\, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance\, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)\, and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. Her work has been presented at major international venues including Lincoln Center Theater\, The Joyce Theater\, Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris\, and the Palace Museum in Beijing\, as well as festivals such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. \nThis program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Do you wish you had asked your family elders more questions before they passed? \nDo you wish you had captured their stories? \nDo you wonder about their resilience that made it possible for you to exist? \nIf you have ever asked yourself these questions\, The Bridgeport History Center invites you to join Curiosity Heals\, a new genealogy workshop series starting May 2026. Sessions guide participants through the healing process of researching\, relating to\, documenting\, and honoring their ancestors. \nOver four\, ninety-minute weekly sessions learn how to construct a family tree along with research techniques utilizing digital archives\, how to conduct an intergenerational oral history and apply their family legacy within a historical context. \nResearch fuels storytelling. To bring family history to life\, participants will document their findings by crafting short family history narrative. In class time is provided for writing\, and optional sharing. \nWeekly in-person sessions on Saturdays at The Bridgeport History Center\, located on the third floor of the Burroughs-Saden Library\, 925 Broad Street in downtown Bridgeport. \n\nMay 9th – Build a Family Tree\nLearn how to navigate online archives together with in-class applications\, troubleshooting and discussion. Start a family tree on FamilySearch and attach historical records to support your research.
