SUMMARY:The Elegance and Style of Chinese Classical Dance: Intro to Liyuan Dance with Kaili Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese classical dance\, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen\, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP (Southern New England Apprenticeship Program) Mentor. \nIn this workshop\, learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance\, including expressive hand gestures\, focused eye work and facial expression\, refined walking patterns\, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance\, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions. \nParticipants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting\, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette. \nBlending movement\, history\, fashion\, and self-expression\, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life. \nWorkshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required. \nTICKETS\n$20 General Admission\n$15 Members\nFree for Member levels $150+\nCost covers all materials. \nAbout the Artist:\nKaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company\, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford\, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance\, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)\, and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. Her work has been presented at major international venues including Lincoln Center Theater\, The Joyce Theater\, Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris\, and the Palace Museum in Beijing\, as well as festivals such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. \nThis program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation.

Sessions guide participants through the healing process of researching\, relating to\, documenting\, and honoring their ancestors. \nOver four\, ninety-minute weekly sessions learn how to construct a family tree along with research techniques utilizing digital archives\, how to conduct an intergenerational oral history and apply their family legacy within a historical context. \nResearch fuels storytelling. To bring family history to life\, participants will document their findings by crafting short family history narrative. DESCRIPTION:Who was the calligrapher that wrote the Declaration of Independence? How did they write during the American Revolution? What tools did they use? What lettering style? Explore these questions and more in this hands-on workshop with calligrapher Debby Reelitz. Learn to write in script\, use a dip nib and ink\, and scribe a line from the Declaration of Independence. This workshop will be structured for the beginner\, but all levels of experience are encouraged to join! Suitable for ages 16 and up. This program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation. About the Artist: Debby Reelitz is a professional calligrapher in North Granby\, Connecticut. Introduced to calligraphy by her 5th grade teacher\, she dabbled for years until opening her own calligraphy studio in Chicago before moving to northern Connecticut. For more than 25 years\, she has been a professional lettering artist\, creating awards\, gifts\, commissions\, engraving\, chalkboards\, writing on walls\, teaching and much more. DESCRIPTION:Life\, Liberty & The Pursuit of a Living\nIn 2026\, American Mural Project observes the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This multi-part program explores how work has shaped our national consciousness and Connecticut communities across history through personal storytelling workshops\, live performance\, film screenings\, exhibits\, and lectures. Together\, these programs engage participants in remembering pivotal events\, amplifying personal stories\, and sparking dialogue about how labor continues to shape American culture and civic life today. \nGet to Work: Telling Your Story\nSaturday\, March 21  | 10am–3pm\nWORKSHOP\nThis daylong workshop\, led by master storyteller Terry Wolfisch Cole\, founder and producer of Tell Me Another events\, introduces participants to the art of personal storytelling. Through lecture\, writing exercises\, and small-group feedback\, participants learn how to choose\, structure\, and share their own stories of work. The day concludes with a practice performance where participants can present their stories to each other in a supportive environment. \n\n\nDetails: \nRegistration fee includes the workshop and admission to AMP. There will be time after the program to tour the exhibit. \nCoffee\, tea\, and snacks will be provided. The presentation will look at a sample of historic places and what they tell us about the past 250 years of local history on the eve of the next year’s national celebration of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. \nWes Haynes is a Stamford native and resident who recently retired from a 45 year career as an architectural historian and historic preservation specialist in the tri-state area. He currently serves on the boards of the Merritt Parkway Conservancy\, Emerson Hall Foundation at the Unitarian-Universalist Church\, and Adirondack Architectural heritage in upstate New York. \n$20 admission for members\, $15 for non-members.

DESCRIPTION:Do you believe that history should be accessible to everyone? Can you read cursive? Then come to Windsor Historical Society Friday\, February 13th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to take part in the nationwide Douglass Day celebration! \nDouglass Day is an annual celebration Frederick Douglass’s legacy. Participants gather each year to communally transcribe documents from a Black history archives collection to help make them more widely accessible to researchers. This year\, participants will transcribe records from the Colored Conventions Project. The Colored Conventions include rich\, historical documents and debates that speak directly to the fight today to secure and preserve citizenship and civil rights. \nWindsor Historical Society will host the transcribe-a-thon in their event space.
