SUMMARY:Revolutionary Haven: Myths of America
DESCRIPTION:New Haven in 1776 — Patriots\, Loyalists\, and the people caught between them. \nA Broken Umbrella Theatre stages the Revolution as the town actually met it: not as settled history\, but as an argument the city was still having with itself. Audiences move room to room through the Blake Street Center in Westville\, entering in small groups over roughly 30 minutes. \nThis October is a work-in-progress showing — a first draft put in front of an audience on purpose\, ahead of a full production in 2027. A Broken Umbrella has spent seventeen years making original theatre out of New Haven’s history\, and for the 250th the company went at the myths themselves: who gets remembered as a patriot\, who gets written out\, and what a town does while it decides. \nSchedule\n\nFriday\, October 16 — 7:30 PM\nSaturday\, October 17 — 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM\nSunday\, October 18 — 2:00 PM\nThursday\, October 22 — 7:30 PM\nFriday\, October 23 — 7:30 PM\nSaturday\, October 24 — 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM\n\nAdmission\nPay what you can\, with a suggested donation of $17.76 — chosen for the year\, not the price. Tickets are available at any price point. \nGood to know\n\nAll ages welcome; 10 and up recommended\, since audiences stand and move throughout.\nElevator access\, seating\, and mobility accommodations are available.\nEntry is staggered in small groups\, so please reserve a specific time. Capacity is limited.\n\nDetails and reservations

SUMMARY:Battle of Ridgefield Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Battle of Ridgefield 250th approaches; Bus tour to explore battlefield route and new discoveries \nAs the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield approaches\, the Ridgefield Historical Society is offering a rare opportunity to travel the route of the British troops and hear firsthand about archaeological discoveries that have transformed our understanding of the battle. \n\nBattlefield historian and archaeologist Dr. David Naumec\, who worked on the Ridgefield Historical Society’s two National Park Service battlefield research projects\, will narrate a bus tour following the route taken by British troops from Danbury through Ridgefield on April 27\, 1777. Along the way\, he will highlight key engagements\, archaeological discoveries\, and new evidence that has expanded knowledge of how the Battle of Ridgefield unfolded. \nThe Battle of Ridgefield Bus Tour will take place Sunday\, Oct. 18\, starting at 10 a.m. from the Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Space aboard the bus is very limited\, making this a special opportunity to experience the battlefield landscape with one of the historians directly involved in its recent investigation. The tour is expected to last about 90 minutes. \nThe Scott House itself has a connection to the events of April 27\, 1777. In its original location on Main Street\, the 1714 saltbox stood near some of the heaviest fighting of the battle. Today\, as headquarters of the Ridgefield Historical Society\, it sits within another area associated with the battle. \nA historian\, archaeologist and museum consultant\, Dr. Naumec was named Historic New England’s Revolution 250 Research Scholar\, studying New England’s Indigenous and African American Revolutionary War veterans. A graduate of UConn\, he holds a master’s degree in History and Museum Studies from Tufts University and a PhD in Race and Ethnicity in Early America through the Civil War from Clark University. His research interests include Native American history\, colonial North America\, Connecticut history and battlefield archaeology. He is museum manager of the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House and Lighthouse Museum with Historic Stonington. \nTickets are limited\, nonrefundable\, and are expected to sell out quickly

SUMMARY:Witch Trials\, Blue Laws\, and the Tooth Fairy: The Legacy of Colonial Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:What do Halloween\, witch hunts\, an English King\, pallbearers\, Leviticus\, and public education have in common? \nThe answer to that puzzle will be the focus of the Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, Oct. 20\, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Susan Kweskin will lead an illustrated group discussion on Connecticut’s dark past\, its own witch trials\, the people who fueled them\, and their enduring impact. Deeply ingrained beliefs\, fears\, and cultural habits of the Connecticut colonists didn’t vanish with the 18th century — they continue to shape our laws\, holiday traditions\, and even our daily lives in Ridgefield. \nExamination of a Witch (1853) by T. H. Matteson\, inspired by the Salem trials\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The group meets for an hour on the third Tuesday of every month to explore a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history through shared conversation. \nEach session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to the Society’s YouTube channel. Everyone is invited—just bring your curiosity and love of history. Some attend every month\, while others join when a topic holds special meaning for them. Longtime Ridgefield residents and newcomers alike are welcome. This free program is a wonderful way to connect with others and discover new insights into the town’s heritage.

SUMMARY:Ridgefield’s Great Estates Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:More than 20 grand estates that covered much of Ridgefield a century ago will be the focus of a bus tour presented by the Ridgefield Historical Society\, from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday\, Nov. 7\, 2026. \nTown Historian Jack Sanders\, author of the book\, Ridgefield’s Great Estates\, will bring the group to and sometimes through these grand properties during a 25-mile excursion of the town\, describing the grounds and mansions – some of which are still standing and have been repurposed. Beginning and ending at Jesse Lee Church at 207 Main Street in Ridgefield\, the tour is entirely by mini school bus and will not include walking around or inside buildings. Seating is limited to 16 people and is expected to sell out quickly. \nFor a complete experience\, tour-goers should bring their copies of Ridgefield’s Great Estates\, for illustrations to which Mr. Sanders will be referring throughout the trip. Copies may be ordered as an add-on at checkout and will be distributed at the bus tour. This book can also be purchased from our friends at Books on the Common. A couple of copies will be available on loan for the tour. \nA Fairfield County native and graduate of the College of the Holy Cross\, Jack Sanders retired in 2014 after 45 years as an editor of The Ridgefield Press. He’s written 20 books on Ridgefield history\, and also created and administers the “Old Ridgefield” group on Facebook\, which has more than 13\,000 followers. SUMMARY:Tellabration 2026
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the art of storytelling at Ridgefield’s Tellabration 2026 on Saturday\, Nov. 21. Founded in 1988 by PawPaw Pinkerton in Connecticut\, Tellabration has grown into a global tradition\, bringing people together through the power of shared stories. Dr. Darla Shaw will return as M.C. and as a story teller. She recruits and coaches the team of storytellers who each share true four-minute (strictly observed) stories that connect to Ridgefield. \n\nTopics this year range from a true crime story to stories highlighting the history of the Ridgefield schools to a neighborhood history and reminiscence (“To Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street” by former State Representative John Frey).
