Pages Through the Ages: Manuals of Power

Few political philosophies have made such an impact in so few words as Niccolò Machiavelli’s medieval masterpiece The Prince. This eminently quotable treatise on the nature of rulers has endured for nearly 500 years because for its observation of the common traits of powerful people, motives and struggles which have characterized leaders from Roman emperors to modern-day presidents.

In the modern day, Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have examined the nature of three thousand years of power into essential laws in their book The 48 Laws of Power by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum.

Pages Through the Ages is a book discussion group hosted jointly by Westport Museum for History & Culture and Westport Library. Compare and contrast The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli and Robert Greene’s The 48 Laws of Power with Bruce McGuirk and other history buffs. Meetings will alternate between the buildings, so please check the venue prior to attending!
