4th Annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence
July 4 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Stamford History Center, 1508 High Ridge Rd.
Stamford, CT 06903 United States
SHC 4th of July Annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence is back! The History Center’s own Rick Petersen will once again recreate the atmosphere of 1776 Stamford in proclaiming the words of the Declaration from the steps of Stamford’s oldest house.
This year we are including readings from other documents reflecting multiple voices seeking justice and equality for all peoples. These readings include excerpts from the Declaration of Rights and Sentiments, signed at the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in 1848, and the famous 1852 speech given by Frederick Douglass “What, To the Slave, Is the Fourth of July?”
Come join us at 10:00 am for the annual ceremony to start your own Fourth of July celebrations in the proper spirit. Last year’s event provided an electric reminder of our shared heritage and Stamford’s unique position during the War of Independence.
