All Hands on Deck: Torrington and World War I

The Torrington Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition, “All Hands on Deck: Torrington and World War I”, which will be on view from July 28th through November 11th. The exhibit interprets Torrington during the World War I years. Explore the contributions of Torrington men and women, both those who who served in the military and the residents who contributed to various home front activities including the Red Cross, loan drives, and food rationing. Learn about the men and women who worked in the local industries, manufacturing goods for the war effort. The exhibit features information and photos of veterans, home-front activities, World War I military uniforms includng a Czechoslovakian Legion uniform, a rare woman’s factory uniform, memorabilia, posters and products made in Torrington during the war. For the first time in a century, a printed list of the approximately 1,400 WWI veterans from Torrington will be on public display. Of note is a section that explores the contributions of Torrington immigrants who served in the war; nearly 25% of World War I veterans from Torrington were foreign-born.
